Mobile vs Workshop Scratch Repair: Which One Do You Actually Need?

I run a mobile repair service, so you'd expect me to talk it up. But I'll be straight with you — mobile isn't right for every job, and I'll tell you when you're better off at a workshop. For cosmetic stuff though — scratches, scuffs, bumper corners, key lines, a dent that needs paint — coming to you is genuinely the better deal. Here's the honest comparison.

The two models, plainly

Mobile repair

I turn up to your place with everything in the van — paint, mixing gear, the lot — and do the repair on your driveway or in your garage while you get on with your day. You don't go anywhere.

Workshop repair

You drive the car in, sort out how you're getting home, then come back when it's done. The shop's juggling a yard full of cars at the same time as yours.

Convenience: where mobile wins easily

For most people this is the whole ballgame. With mobile you skip:

  • Two trips to drop off and collect
  • The fuel and the time those trips eat
  • Sorting a lift or a hire car while yours sits in a queue
  • Taking a morning off work for a half-hour job

I had a bloke in Greenvale who booked me for his lunch break — I buffed a trolley scrape out of his Mazda CX-5 in the work car park while he ate, and he drove home with it sorted. You're not doing that with a workshop.

Cost: lower overheads, lower price

A shop pays rent, power, and wages for a front counter. That all goes into the hourly rate — usually $80 to $150 an hour, often with a few extras stacked on top:

  • Diagnostic or assessment fees
  • "Shop supplies" and consumables
  • Disposal fees
  • Storage if your car sits there a while

I don't carry any of that, so my quotes come in lower and they're a fixed price off your photos — what I say is what you pay. Get it in writing either way; that's just good sense.

Quality: it's the hands, not the building

This is the big myth — that a workshop automatically does better work. It doesn't. I use the same professional paint, the same mixing and matching gear, the same prep and clear coat a shop uses. The result comes down to the person holding the gun and the time they take, not the address. A good mobile repairer and a good shop produce the same finish. Check reviews and ask to see before-and-after photos either way.

What mobile handles well

Cosmetic damage that isn't structural — which is the vast majority of what people need:

  • Surface and deeper scratches
  • Bumper scuffs and scrapes
  • Stone chips
  • Keyed and vandalised panels
  • Door dings and small dents that need paint
  • Single-panel repairs

When you genuinely need a workshop

I'll send you to a shop without hesitation for:

  • Crash damage that needs panels replaced
  • Anything structural or safety-related
  • A full respray of the whole car
  • Jobs that need a hoist
  • Welding and fabrication

If you describe the damage to me and it's one of those, I'll tell you straight — no point me turning up to a job that needs a workshop.

How long it takes

Because it's just me and your one car, there's no queue. Most repairs are 3 to 4 hours and plenty get done the same day around the Craigieburn area. A busy shop juggling a dozen cars often has your "quick" scratch sitting two or three days for the same work.

Talking to the person doing the job

One thing people quietly value: with me you talk to the bloke actually fixing the car, not a service advisor passing messages to someone out the back. You can show me exactly what's bugging you and watch it get done.

So which is right for you?

Go mobile for scratches, scuffs, dings, bumper and paint repairs where you'd rather not lose half a day. Go workshop for collision, structural, full resprays or anything needing a hoist. For the cosmetic stuff, I'll come to you.
